My
name is Emily Smith-Lee and I am running for the Sharon School Committee
because I believe the people of Sharon need and deserve an open,
accountable, and responsive School Committee as we face the dual challenges
associated with: (i) maintaining a high quality school system in the face of
increasing fiscal restraints; and (ii) delivering a well-rounded and child-centered
educational experience while meeting our responsibilities under state and
federal requirements.
My vision is of a School Committee committed to the
following principles:
Collaboration and Communication with Stakeholders
Appropriate and Transparent Decision-Making
Recognizing and Valuing Each Child’s Potential
Economic Fairness
Stewardship of the Budget
Please
visit the Issues and Ideas page
for further explanation of these principles, as well as links to state and
local resources. Thank you for visiting the campaign website. I
hope you will find it a useful source of information, and take advantage of the
Guestbook to let me
know your thoughts and concerns about the Sharon Public Schools.
About Me
Education: I received my law degree from Boston College Law School in 1996, and my undergraduate degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University.
Professional: until October,
2009, I was a partner in the litigation department of McDermott, Will &
Emery. I have since started a litigation practice here in Sharon, and am
undergoing training to become a professional mediator.
Involvement
in the Schools:
I was a weekly classroom parent aide in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade, and
served on the Alternative School Board/Council for three years, the last year
and a half as Co-Chair. In that role, I worked closely with teachers,
administrators, and other parents on a wide variety of issues, and had the
opportunity to observe in some detail the activities of the School Committee.
Family: I have two children
in the Sharon Public Schools, a daughter in 8th grade at the Sharon Middle School, and
a son in 5th grade at the Sharon Alternative Elementary School. My
husband Bob is the Chief Analyst for the Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education (formerly known as the DOE).
Other
community and volunteer involvement: Sharon Rotary Club,
Instructor/Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge University,
instructor for the Citizens Schools/Discovering Justice Mock Trial program for Boston public middle school students.
